I don’t like accidents and I don’t like blood which means choosing cooking utensils requires safety consciousness. Knives should be sharp and the handles secure to avoid needless injury. Selecting the proper knife for the job will also help keep the cooking process uninterrupted.
When it comes to chopping and slicing most cooks have a specific choice. Mine has a curved blade so that it rocks gently across the food. If I have several different tasks to perform while preparing a meal that special knife gets washed and dried often.
We’re catching onto some amazing trends that help our homes and our world by using renewable resources. Going green blogs are on fire with ideas that are often very easy to implement. Most of what we do in our home to help the environment actually saves us money.
Perfectly natural, bamboo is a new miraculous material for western civilization but among the oldest in the world. Structurally harder than Maple, Bamboo is a member of the grass family and doesn’t need the care that most wood boards require. Bamboo boards are lightweight and can double as serving trays. The hard surface means fewer nicks and slices that harbor bacteria. Bamboo boards are kitchen tools that are an attractive and useful complement to any kitchen.
They may as well be on the counter clean and ready when I wake up because without the glass cutting board and a sharp knife we can hardly get through breakfast. Somebody wants fresh fruit chopped in their cereal, or we need to chop the onions and garlic for an omelet.
Before lunch arrives we’re cutting up apple wedges, carrots or celery. We almost make it through lunch unless we’ve baked homemade bread which may require a different knife, but still requires the cutting board.
Finally coming to the end of the day we’re chopping and slicing for dinner, which means the cutting board and knife can call it a day. Mr. Grill can put his feet up, while his poor wife keeps on working.
Homemade pizza is a favorite at our house and if it weren’t for the house rules, we’d be eating everything from soup to nuts on top of our pies nightly. In moderation, which seems to be a relative term where the kids are concerned, we enjoy homemade pizza.
If my favorite food is homemade pizza then it stands to reason that my favorite kitchen utensils are the pizza stone and wheel. Truth be told I’ve been know to use my favorite utensil on homemade chocolate chip cookie cakes as well.
I’m watching a rafter of wild turkeys making their rounds through the woods while standing next to my grill. They can’t hide now that most of the leaves have fallen and I’m still curious how they’d taste barbequed. Being a lover of naturally raised or fresh game, I’m confident it might be the best turkey ever to come off my grill.
The grill and barbeque tools are clean and ready for the challenge but unless I get my hunting license in a hurry the first wild turkey I cook won’t be from this group. A friend has told me that I can purchase one in the butcher shop but knowing where it came from is part of the allure.
When we think of housewarming or wedding gifts we can’t forget the likelihood that for the first time in their lives these people are going to either start learning how to cook or how to cook for each other. This is one of the reasons I’m partial to long courtships because dates in restaurants just don’t reveal enough about our tastes.
The new cook needs all the help they can get which includes recipes, cookware and all the cooking utensils necessary to follow the recipes. Our advice to them should be to keep it simple at first and always pay attention to the seasoning. Any serious relationship or new home should also have plenty of spice in the kitchen.
Having a carving knife that effectively moves from task to task is invaluable for saving time and energy. Knives that we rely upon we like to keep clean and ready. Whether they can go in the dishwasher or not we need to know they’ll be available for the next job.
We want the handle to feel like it belongs to us. A grip that is comfortable gives a sense of confidence which leads to further enjoyment of our work. Kitchen utensils are the tools we wield especially when they’re sharp and pointed.
We all have our own favorite methods of chopping and slicing, as well as favorite tools to accomplish the task. Regardless of which knife or cutting board I select, onions still make me more emotional than any of my kitchen utensils.
I’ll admit many friends of mine have shown me some pretty amazing gadgets they’ve acquired over the years. After explaining what wonders these contraptions perform I always ask how often they use them. Then they show me their favorite knife and cutting board.
I’m a proponent for year round grilling. I get the rotisserie going over the winter holidays for the slow roast. Provided you can keep your grill out of the elements a number of off season barbeque possibilities emerge.
For years our thanksgiving turkey has been grilled outdoors. Even grilling salmon keeps all the smells out of the house and only requires a quick visit now and then. So I keep the barbeque tools handy because my grilling season never ends.
We know the cooking utensils that give us headaches but we may take for granted those that are immediately chosen again and again without thinking twice. The handles are solid, they don’t trap water in unusual places and they do the job we expect without any surprises.
Special considerations apply for instance to spatulas that are designed for larger jobs as opposed to those we need for tighter spaces. Whatever the application may be, we’re either consciously or subconsciously reaching for our favorites and hoping we find them.
