We know the cooking utensils that give us headaches but we may take for granted those that are immediately chosen again and again without thinking twice. The handles are solid, they don’t trap water in unusual places and they do the job we expect without any surprises.
Special considerations apply for instance to spatulas that are designed for larger jobs as opposed to those we need for tighter spaces. Whatever the application may be, we’re either consciously or subconsciously reaching for our favorites and hoping we find them.

Honoring the need for plastic spatulas in non stick cookware is essential to extending the life of the finish. Likewise stirring in non stick pots requires a plastic spoon or ladle. Sometimes my choices for kitchen utensils is limited by their application regarding cookware and other times regarding the food I’m preparing.
I have favorite spoons for serving, and specific spatulas for grilling sandwiches or flipping eggs. If I’m whisking a sauce in a stainless steel frying pan I’ll always have a soft spatula on hand to work the sauce off the sides. We don’t want to encourage fast food deliveries, or even dining out extensively on a tight budget. What better way to inspire a new young cook than with a set of tools.
Keeping in mind as parents when we have an opportunity to visit, we want to feel at home in their new kitchen. Not necessarily to take over, but to know we’ll be comfortable in whatever cooking endeavor we have in mind.
I’ve thrown away more dull knives and spatulas with broken handles than I can remember. When kitchen utensils don’t perform the way we expect our work becomes less enjoyable and our creativity suffers. We want the right tools to do the job each and every time.
While variety is necessary in that we can’t use the same great utensil for every job, the quality of those utensils we use can’t be compromised. From the grip that won’t slip, to the perfect slice and dice we need to have confidence that our kitchen utensils won’t let us down.
