A Trip to the Cow Palace

My parents’ Wisconsin dairy farm has somehow managed to stay afloat even in these harsh economic times. I think it has to do with my father’s natural business sense and the fact that he streamlined costs and offered severance packages to a few employees at the first sign of trouble. While I always enjoy going back to the farm, walking through the fields and visiting the expansive dairy barns, I’m always caught off guard by the interior of the farmhouse.

The kitchen, living room and spare bedroom are all crammed to the gills with bovine memorabilia. The place is a veritable museum – a shrine to everything cow. My mother has accumulated collectible cookie jars by the dozens along with figurines, knickknacks, bric-a-brac, wall paintings, oven mitts, doilies, coasters, piggy banks and every other piece of dairy farm ephemera imaginable.

12217Certain visual stimuli are indeed a motivating force as well as a reminder to set us in action. I often think children are more inspired by the emptiness of the cookie jar. They’re either busy doing the emptying, or reminding us of how empty it has become.

We have categories of cookie recipes that have come from a variety of sources that combine to make a most impressive collection. Yet the recipes themselves don’t offer the inspiration to do some baking. Seeing the row of collectible cookie jars is often the nudge we need to pull out our collection of recipes and put them to use.

12217Having an assortment of cookies is always helpful when faced with varying tastes and preferences. Almost everyone likes cookies and among those who profess to like them, nothing beats home made. When decorating our kitchens we can choose collectible cookie jars to satisfy our tastes, but what those cookie jars collect can satisfy the tastes of others.

If we have an assortment of collectible cookie jars it either satisfies the need to store an assortment of cookies, or hide the batch we just made. Whatever our choices regarding cookie jars we have to be aware that eventually the cookies will be found.
