When it’s time to entertain get creative because memorable moments are usually unique in one way or another. Even if the event isn’t an actual party we can still do something different to make the moment special for those visiting our homes.
Where are the scented candles?
Where did we put the crystal flower vase?
Where are the novelty salt and pepper shakers?
The questions we’ll ask might depend upon the company we expect. Simply by anticipating who will be visiting, we can make that visit special, without much difficulty at all.
Having spent time in England I’m aware that most people are looking for more than salt on their fries (or chips as the locals call them) and usually expect to find at least vinegar on the table. I was a bigger fan of ketchup when I was younger, but was raised to keep it stored in the refrigerator. Rarely have I seen people reach for mustard as a common condiment.
While each of us has a preference, having the salt and pepper shakers as part of the cruet set will likely meet the needs of most. With the ever growing popularity of balsamic vinegar I’m thinking of slipping that out on the daily table setting. Then I’ll be ready to whip up a batch of fish and chips.
When we decorate our kitchens and dining rooms for special occasions or seasons it’s nice to have an assortment of novelty items for display. An even better feature is when these items have a useful purpose as well.
Having more novelty salt and pepper shakers on hand enables us to put just the right finishing touches on that special moment. When that moment spans several days you can shake up the routine by switching the shakers every day.
Sometimes the creativity behind kitchen and dining accessories gets a little extreme but lets face it, we all enjoy discovering even simple things that are unique. Since animal lovers have such a variety of tastes we can virtually decorate a curio with a menagerie of domestic and wild animal salt and pepper shakers.
Of course the theme doesn’t have to be animal related at all. I don’t particularly want to see large insects holding the salt and pepper on the table because that just isn’t culturally acceptable. Yet the possibilities abound for the many interesting ways to contain salt and pepper leaving us to either surprise others or be surprised by what we find on the table.
We love those people that collect novelty salt and pepper shakers because when you go to visit, you never know what will be out on the table. If we know what they’re serving we try to guess.
Our collection still isn’t vast enough to keep people guessing. However the novelty salt and pepper shakers are always good for a few comments.
Most of us don’t have bus boys running about our kitchens and dining rooms so the chore to fill the salt and pepper shakers has to be assigned. When we sit down to dinner and get up for this or that, running out of salt and pepper can be bothersome. If we have company over, it can be embarrassing.
So on the check list, or the chore list, we make sure we have napkins, silverware and that the salt and pepper shakers are full. Beyond that we can consider flowers or candles depending on the setting.
We get accustomed to the decor in our favorite diner or restaurant. Sometimes it’s simply the colors they’ve used for the walls, or can be as unique as the novelty salt and pepper shakers on the tables. We find lighting fixtures or window and table treatments all accenting the room to create a memorable atmosphere. They want us to come again.
When we take the time to add these details to our own home we won’t purposefully choose curtains that clash with our wall color. Or select picture frames that look out of place. So when we decorate our table we can say it was worth our time and effort to take that extra measure.
